Intimate Partner Abuse Education Programs (Formerly Called Batterer’s Intervention Programs).

If the court orders you to go to a certified IPAEP, you should expect that:

  • You must go to at least one (sometimes a few) intake sessions—many are held on zoom—so the program can determine if you are a good fit for that particular program.

If you get into the program, you must sign an agreement that says:

  • You will finish the program.
  • You will not be violent to your intimate partner.
  • In most programs, you cannot use drugs or alcohol while you are in the program.
  • You must pay for the program, which is usually assessed on a “sliding-fee” scale. Payments plans are often available, but you will have to pay something up front.
  • If the court determines that you cannot afford the fee, you may be able to substitute hours of community service instead, but this requires special approval.
  • You must go to 80 hours of sessions to complete the program. The sessions are usually 2 hours long and run for 40 weeks.

This is not a private counseling program. The program is required to share things you say and do with the court and other agencies. The program will also tell the court how many sessions you attend and report on your progress in the program.

The program will contact the person you allegedly abused, if the person wants to be contacted. Additionally:

  • The program may help that person advocate for additional conditions being imposed as part of any resolution to the case.
  • The program will notify the other party when you finish the program.
  • The program will warn them about things you say, like threats or any illegal activities.

The program will refer you to additional services, like drug or alcohol programs, employment training, and parenting skills classes.

You do not have to wait for a court to order to go to one of these programs. You can go on your own! Still, it is important to consult with an attorney before signing up for any program that could have an impact on your rights and your record!
